ANTARCTICA and the IAATO
IAATO is a member organisation, founded in 1991, to advocate, promote, and practice safe and environmentally responsible private-sector travel to the Antarctic.
INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ANTARCTICA TOUR OPERATORS (IAATO)
Since 1959, the provisions of the Antarctic Treaty and its subsequent agreements have governed Antarctica. Under the Treaty, Antarctica is considered a natural reserve, devoted to peace and science.
In 1991, the Antarctic Treaty parties adopted the Protocol on Environmental Protection. This sets out principles, obligations, and procedures for all human activities in Antarctica to ensure the protection of the natural environment and its scientific and aesthetic values.
Most of the companies operating in Antarctica are members of this organisation, which guarantees the preservation of Antarctica as a tourist destination.
Once aboard your vessel, you will be briefed about IAATO and the way to conduct yourself when you get to Antarctica.
